ADMINISTRATIVE PROFESSIONAL (AP)
Interns – available in June; Graduates – available in September
Work with major software programs, website design, spreadsheets, and database management; perform software training, computer support, and essential office procedures.
Examples of Past Internship Experiences
- Maintain databases

- Design database to survey training participants

BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION: ACCOUNTING (BAA)
Interns – available in March; Graduates – available in June
Work with major software programs, perform general ledger, payroll, inventory, fixed asset, receivable, payable, and reconciliation functions; assist with financial report preparation; and general office functions.
Examples of Past Internship Experiences
- Process cash receipts, daily sales invoices, and balance cash box
- Track and process client accounts receivable
- Document transactions using QuickBooks

- Process accounts payable and run checks
- Enter payroll and payroll journal entries

BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION: MANAGEMENT & MARKETING (BAMM)
Interns – available in June; Graduates – available in September
Develop marketing plans, create advertising and PR materials, conduct market research and perform basic accounting functions. Trained in sales and customer service. Understand management concepts including project planning, human resource management, and purchasing/inventory control. Able to develop and create a business plan. Work with software programs such as Microsoft Office, InDesign, Dreamweaver, and PowerPoint.

Technology
ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY (ET)
Interns – available in June; Graduates – available in September
Perform AutoCAD design in the mechanical, civil, and architectural fields; perform data collection and statistical analysis; use precision measuring instruments; and perform engineering support duties; Civil drafting and design using Civil 3D software; Architectural drafting; Dimensional metrology and geometric dimensioning/tolerancing (GD&T); Excel spreadsheets (create and use spreadsheets); Data collection, charting, and analysis; Familiarity with machining processes (milling, turning, drilling, tapping); CNC programming for milling (manually and using CAM software); and Solid modeling using Autodesk Inventor.
Examples of Past Internship Experiences
- Update existing mechanical, architectural, and civil drawings with design changes
- Assist civil engineers in preparing site plans
- Make 3-dimensional assembly drawings of parts and machine assemblies, using solid modeling software
- Help with the design of new precast concrete structures (e.g.: parking garages structures)
- Collect and analyze data from ongoing materials testing (e.g.: corrosion testing)
- Create AutoCAD drawings for parts, fixtures
- Assist with new product development projects
- Complete manufacturing time studies and documentation of manufacturing assembly processes

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (IT)
Interns – available in June; Graduates – available in September
Core skills for IT students include: basic networking and troubleshooting, PC hardware repair, systems analysis and design, office applications support, problem solving, website design, basic accounting, and technical writing. Students also take specialized courses in the programming and networking fields.

- Create modules, update code, alter databases
- Program PHP, AJAX, JAVASCRIPT

Healthcare
HEALTH INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (HIT)
Interns – available in March; Graduates – available in June
HIT Internships are scheduled two weeks during the fall term, two weeks during the Winter term, and six weeks during the Spring term. Please contact Brenda Stover — bstover@southhills.edu for more information.
Work with healthcare facilities to implement new regulations, generate statistics, and implement computerized patient records; code patient records; maintain databases; and manage patient information for continuity of care purposes, research, and education.
Examples of Past Internship Experiences
- Code ICD-9-CM and DSM IV, CPT-4
- Prepare DRG assignment & reimbursement
- Complete computerized patient records
- Process release of information
- Help with quality improvement

MEDICAL OFFICE SPECIALIST (MOS)
Interns – available in March; Graduates – available in June
Work in healthcare settings to perform essential medical office procedures; such as transcribing dictation, scheduling appointments, maintaining medical records, processing insurance and billing forms, using medical software programs.
Examples of Past Internship Experiences
- Code CPT procedure and ICD-9-CM diagnosis codes for physician services
- Perform insurance verification and billing functions
- Create patient medical folders, check patients in and out, collect payments, retrieve and enter patient insurance information
- Schedule patient appointments and make reminder appointment calls
- Generate a list of the next day’s patients, access patient files, scan medical reports in an electronic health record
- Transcribe a variety of medical reports: emergency room, physical therapy notes, progress notes, and referral letters
- Class work projects: Medical Office Procedure manual, Transcription Reference manual, Medical Office brochure

Legal
CRIMINAL JUSTICE (CJ)
Interns – available in March; Graduates – available in June
Work with both criminal justice agencies and other private agencies
to assist with basic security and investigations, record-keeping, and
the monitoring of facilities and/or equipment. Internships may also
involve interaction and assessment of various types of offenders. Criminal Justice students:
- Learn investigative techniques and basic security
- Develop strong critical thinking and writing skills
- Learn the criminal legal process/procedure for the PA Court System
- Become familiar with criminal law, security law and family law
- Gain competence with computer software and keyboarding skills
- Work with software programs (Microsoft Office)
- Complete comprehensive projects that follow a criminal incident through the criminal justice process from the beginning stages of a crime scene or emergency through the court process, incarceration and parole. Students apply relevant legal concepts and preparing the proper reports throughout the project term.

- Assist with security/monitoring services
- Help police and other offices with investigating and record keeping functions

LEGAL ASSISTANT (LA)

Work with major software programs; prepare legal papers; and arrange/schedule hearings and depositions.

- Prepare pleadings, deeds, and other legal documents
- Work with attorneys and clients
- Organize files
- Perform telephone and reception duties
- Process adoptions
- Help children’s charity set up database of donors
- Prepare flyers and information packets for highly visible charity golf tournament
- Serve as customer service liaison for celebrities attending the tournament

Graphics
GRAPHIC ARTS (GA)
Interns – available in June; Graduates – available in September
Work with industry standard software programs, such as Quark, Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver and Flash. Each student is knowledgeable in the areas of advertising and package design, publication layouts, concept development, color theory, typography, and web-based design application. Students generally have a working knowledge of the importance of verbal and written communications.

- Design logos, company branding identities
- Prepare advertising designs and campaigns
- Create publication designs of tri-folds and promotional literature
- Develop magazine designs of articles and features
- Produce book productions including interior and cover/jacket design
- Prepare software/product manuals
- Perform digital pre-flight and pre-press
- Create website designs
- Design and develop Website templates
- Work on Flash banner design and development
