STATE COLLEGE — South Hills School of Business & Technology will offer a new Specialized Associate Degree program this fall at its Main Campus in State College – an Associate in Specialized Technology (AST) in Software Development and Programming (SDP).
The new program will offer students interested in preparing for careers such as software development, computer programming, applications development, and web development with an opportunity to graduate within two years.
The existing Information Technology program at South Hills offers a broad-based curriculum that includes courses in hardware, network administration, programming, and software development. The new Software Development and Programming program provides students with the opportunity to “dive deeper” into programming, which will allow them to become more specialized. “This new degree program was developed in response to feedback we received from our Program Advisory Committee, which is made up of local information technology professionals, as well as feedback from regional employers,“ said Program Coordinator and Instructor, Matthew Penning.
Course examples include Apple® and Android® Application Development, Python Programming, PHP, and JavaScript. The faculty all have experience working in the field of information technology that allows them to bring relevant knowledge and experiences into the classroom.
The SDP program, like the others at South Hills, will include an internship before graduation. This hands-on experience will provide students with the opportunity to apply the skills they’ve learned in the classroom in real-world settings with host businesses.
South Hills President, S. Paul Mazza III said, “The addition of the Software Development and Programming program reflects our school’s strong commitment to meeting the needs of both employers and our students. We feel the addition of this program was a logical next step for us, as this expansion builds on the technology strengths already present at South Hills. The demand for trained and qualified technology workers continues to grow, and South Hills is well-positioned to train people to fill those jobs.”
South Hills is currently accepting applications for enrollment in the SDP program, and the inaugural class will begin their studies in August.
The program was approved by the Secretary of Education, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and the Pennsylvania State Board of Private Licensed Schools to award Associate in Specialized Technology degrees. South Hills School of Business & Technology is accredited by The Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges (ACCSC).
